First count for West Mayo favours old Erris electoral area

A LONG 24 hours after The Mayo News revealed the tally for the first count in the West Mayo Municipal District, the official first count was announced by County Secretary, John Condon, in a packed Ruby Room, at the TF Count Centre.
Sinn Féin’s Rose Conway-Walsh topped the poll, as predicted, with a whopping 2078 first preferences, exceeding the quota of 1901 by 177 votes.
She was  followed by Independent Cllr Michael Holmes who received 1667 votes. Both candidates, who look certain to be elected, are sitting councillors in the now realigned Belmullet Electoral Area.
Achill’s Fianna FΡil newcomer is coming in third with 1351 first
preferences, leaving the old Belmullet Electoral Area faring better for representation at this stage. However, Fine Gael Westport Town Cllr Tereasa McGuire is in fourth place at the moment with 1200 votes while Belmullet-based newcomer for Fianna FΡil, Sean Carey, at 1196, has four votes less that McGuire and two more than sitting Fine Gael Cllr Gerry Coyle (1194).
Former Fine Gael Town Councillor for Westport, Christy Hyland, who ran as an Independent after  he failed to receive the party nomination is in sixth place with 1160 first preferences while Fine Gael’s Austin O’Malley could be in a dogfight with Fianna FΡil’s Brendan Mulroy for the seventh and last seat.
Conway-Walsh’s surplus is now being distributed.
