Maggie Gibbons looks at what’s in for footwear this winter, from party shoes to must-have boots
Footwear to keep you on your toes
Maggie Gibbons
So many shoes, so little time … sigh! For me, shoes are the Holy Grail of accessories. Love them. It was, then, with great interest (and nervous anticipation) that I checked out the footwear trends for winter 2011 – and believe me, I was not disappointed. From colour to fabric to buckles, it’s there; something to suit every shoe-loving gal. I always tell my clients that nothing will cheer you up faster than a fab pair of shoes or boots. They needn’t cost a fortune either, just check out your local shoe shops and boutiques. Don’t forget places like Dunnes and Penneys for bargains. So what are the major trends then?
Colours Rich burgundy, grey, chocolate brown, red, violet, black of course, and metallics. The fabrics are mainly leather, suede and satin. Reptile patterns (like snake and crocodile) are still in vogue.
Lace Lace was huge on the runways this season, on heels, on boots, everywhere. I’m going to do a DIY job and stick on some lace from tights onto boots that are a bit scuffed … Voilà!
Feathers If you are interested in style, you will already be aware that feathers are on everything this season, from accessories to shoes. Very funky and colourful.
Glitz and glitter ‘Diamonds on the soles of her shoes’ has just taken on a whole new meaning – it’s all about glittery heels right now. Why not do it yourself with some sequins? You can also add some glamour with bucketfuls of buckles.
Heels Chunky are in, practical and comfortable in wintertime. But stiletto lovers need not despair – spiky heels are back for another year. Phew.
Boots Whether your preference is for long, short or thigh-length, you will strike gold. The only trend I’m not mad about is the cowboy boot, which has resurrected itself, albeit with the addition of a few feathers. It’s not my style at all, but each to their own. Ankle boots are still there to the fore and there is gorgeous fur on most of them, which can be turned up or down depending on your own particular style or indeed outfit. That’s the great thing about boots – you can either dress them up or down, they can look great worn casually with denims, or amazing with a dress for a more elegant look.
