Thousands flock to Ballina for annual Heritage Day

In the region of 20,000 people are expected in Ballina this afternoon as the town celebrates its annual Heritage Day.
The town centre has been closed off to traffic since early morning but Gardaí have put in place orbital routes around the town.
The heritage day is one of the highlights of the Ballina Salmon Festival, which runs until Sunday next, July 11. For more visit ballinasalmonfestival.ie


Protest in Castlebar over proposed cut to disabilities services

A protest has taken place outside the office of Government TD, Beverley Flynn, in Castlebar, this afternoon, in protest at cuts to services for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.
Similar protests were also due to take place in Galway and Dublin. The protesters are hoping that the HSE will be forced to rethink plans for any further budgetary cuts on what they say are already hard-pressed services.


Mayo council staff to get on their bikes next Monday

All staff in Mayo local authorities are been encouraged to leave the car at home and make alternative arrangements to travel to work on Monday next, July 12. The initiative, which was proposed at a council meeting earlier this year by Cllr Joe Mellett, aims to highlight the importance of physical activity in daily working life, awareness of road safety and general health/wellbeing of local authority employees. The proposed day has the backing of council management, councillors and Iompar Mhuigheo amongst others.
