Gang members banned from Westport pubs for six months

Seven youths from Westport and Louisburgh have been ordered not to set foot in a licensed premises in Westport for the next six months after they were involved in a fight in the town.
The young men - three of whom were from Louisburgh and four from Westport - pleaded guilty to the public order charge of threatening and insulting behaviour at today’s sitting of Castlebar Circuit Court. The incidents took place on Castlebar Street in Westport at approximately 3am on April 5, 2009 outside the C2 nightclub, when rival factions from Westport and Louisburgh were involved in a number of scuffles.
Gardaí described the street as being ‘black with people’ as up to 30 people were involved in the scuffles. The seven men had faced charges of violent disorder but a ‘nolle prosequi’ was entered following the guilty plea to the public order charge. Judge Raymond Groarke adjourned sentencing for a year to see how the two groups behave.

Ballina street reopened after early morning gas leak

Ten houses in the Barrett Street area of Ballina are without gas this afternoon after a contractor struck a main gas pipe, causing a leak.
An Bord GΡis sent a crew to the area at 10.15am this morning to investigate the leak and the area was closed for nearly an hour. Work is continuing to repair the leak and it is hoped to have the gas supply restored to the houses in question later this evening.

Things have to change in Mayo, says Alan Dillon

The failure of Mayo players to work as a team has been identified as one of the main reasons for the county’s shock All-Ireland championship exit at the hands of Longford last weekend.
Speaking exclusively to The Mayo News, Alan Dillon also said that Mayo’s good run in the National League had ‘papered over the cracks’ and that the team’s next manager should come from within the county boundaries.
