Westport Film Club screens ‘Transit’

The Westport Film Club continues their autumn/winter 2019 season at the W Cinema with German drama ‘Transit’ on Wednesday, October 2, at 8.45pm.
Based on the novel by Anna Serghers, which drew from her own experiences in wartime France, writer/director Christian Petzold boldly transplants the story to a version of the present day. Refugee Georg flees to Marseilles from Paris having assumed the identity of an author, Weidel, from papers he has found. As he attempts to find passage on a ship with the stolen documents, he becomes fascinated by a mysterious woman looking for her lost husband – the same Weidel whose papers Georg is passing off as his own. Petzold blends the wartime-era story with a contemporary setting, which highlights the timelessness and urgency of the plight of displaced people.
Christian Petzold’s ‘Transit’ was selected for the official competition of the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival and was awarded Best Film at this year’s Virgin Media Dublin Film Festival by the Dublin Critics Circle.
The film is 102 minutes long and in German and French with English subtitles. It has been rated 12A by IFCO for brief strong language and brief moderate bloody violence, with mild nudity. Next month’s film will be ‘Rafiki’ on Wednesday, November 6, a vibrant Kenyan LGBT love story that became the first movie from Kenya to play at the Cannes Film Festival. The final movie of the 2019 season will be Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘Pain and Glory’ on Wednesday, December 4.
Tickets can be purchased in the W Cinema from 8.30pm, on Wednesday, October 2. Non-Members are always welcome and guests can pay €10 entry per film.
