Folk and ballad band the Sam Maguires are playing in Cosy Joe’s, Westport, on Sunday, October 21
Keeping spirits high at Cosy’s
Mayo might not to be able to celebrate its fourth Sam Maguire, but it can celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Sam Maguires. The band, which is playing in Cosy Joe’s, Westport, on Sunday, October 21, formed ten years ago in Killala, and they specialise in the kind of folk and ballad songs that will ease the pain of an All-Ireland defeat. The Sam Maguires is made up by guitarist and vocalist Jimmy O’Donnell; guitarist, vocalist and harmonica player Brendan Farrell; and Eugene Farrell, who plays a range of string instruments, including banjo and mandolin. As a group, they bring together an amazing vocal arrangement designed to inspire a crowd. They are also famed for their passionate renditions of well-known ballads, tapping in to their vast catalogue of tunes which are predominantly borne from Ireland, Scotland and America. After touring the highways and byways of Ireland, as well as enjoying many adventures around Europe, over the past 10 years, they have built up a reputation for raw, emotional and powerful music.
