ARTS Students launch ROPES literary journal

Literature students show the Ropes for children’s hospice


ROPES, a literary journal compiled annually by students of the MA in Literature and Publishing, NUI Galway, was launched during the recent Cúirt International Festival of Literature. All proceeds from the sale of the journal will go directly to the LauraLynn House, a branch of the Children’s Sunshine Home – Ireland’s only children’s hospice.
The journal has piqued a lot of interest in the west and is already selling fast. This year’s project manager, Orla Reilly from Castlebar, is thrilled with the publication’s success. “We are so delighted about the response to ROPES 2012. It is great to see so many people supporting local and international talents, and we are overwhelmed at the support the local population has for LauraLynn House,” she said.
This year’s edition looks at the general feeling that comes with the current economic climate. This is looked at by examining the innocence of childhood and the maturity that comes with age. The pieces are organically linked through the themes of reflection and anticipation – subjects that are not uncommon during difficult times, and which are recurrent in Irish literature.
ROPES 2012 includes contributors from John Waters and Nuala Ní Choncúir, and Mike McCormack, as well as students and writers from across Ireland and the US.
