Doubt cast in Westport drama
St Patrick’s Drama Group, Westport, is staging four performances of the acclaimed play ‘Doubt’, by John Patrick Shanley, in Scoil Phadraig, Altamont Street, this week as part of Westport Arts Festival. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a classic drama exploring the fine line between certainty and doubt and how life-changing it can be for anyone accused of wrongdoing in the face of the flimsiest evidence. Directed by Fintan MacMahon and produced by Marion Moran, the play is set in the fictional St Nicholas Church School, in the Bronx, New York in the Autumn of 1964. The school’s principal Sister Aloysius (Nuala Currid), a rigidly conservative nun vowed to the order of the Sisters of Charity, accuses the school pastor, Father Flynn (Paul O’Brien) of improper conduct. She rejects his explanation of the circumstances surrounding the accusation and sets out to force him to resign from his position. Parents should note that the play’s theme may not be suitable for younger theatre goers.
‘Doubt’ will be staged at 8pm on October 5, 6, 7 and 8 in Scoil Phadraig, Altamount Street, Westport. Tickets are now on sale at the ticket office on James Street, Westport, which is open from 3pm to 6pm daily. Admission is €10. For ticket inquiries, call 086 8609981.
