Diversions to be in place between Westport and Turlough during grass cutting operations

N5 road closures night maintenance works

Night-time closures are planned on the N5 between Westport and Turlough to facilitate roadside maintenance works.

Motorists in Co Mayo are being advised of upcoming night-time road closures along a section of the N5 dual carriageway to facilitate essential maintenance works.

Mayo County Council has announced plans to temporarily close the N5 between Westport and Turlough for grass cutting along roadside verges.

The closures will take place over a five-night period between April 20 and May 1, 2026, with works scheduled during off-peak hours from 7pm to 6am. The exact start date will be confirmed in advance, and roads will reopen earlier each night if work is completed ahead of schedule.

The affected stretch runs from the N5/R309 roundabout in Turlough to the junction of the N5 dual and single carriageway near Westport.

During the closures, clearly signposted diversion routes will be in place, with all traffic redirected via the R309 (Old N5). This will apply to both eastbound and westbound traffic, as well as vehicles travelling from connecting routes including the N60, R308, N84 and R307.

The council confirmed that the traffic management plan has been agreed with An Garda Síochána and that emergency access will be maintained at all times.

Drivers are advised to plan journeys in advance and allow extra travel time during the affected nights.
