Minister Alan Dillon TD announces the funding of €5,085,769 has been provided to Mayo County Council to support home adaptations for older people and people with disabilities.

Minister Alan Dillon TD announced that more than €5 million has been allocated to support home adaptations for older people and people with disabilities across Mayo.

According to the Mayo TD, the funding of €5,085,769 has been provided to Mayo County Council under the Government’s Housing Adaptation Grants scheme.

He said the funding will help residents carry out essential works to make their homes safer and more suitable for their needs, enabling them to remain living independently in their communities.

“This funding will have a meaningful impact on the home life of many older people and those with disabilities in Mayo,” Minister Dillon said.

“These grants are crucial in enabling Mayo County Council to further support older and disabled individuals to adapt their homes to suit their needs and to maintain their independence.”

Nationally, Government funding for the scheme has increased by 30% this year, with an additional €30 million bringing the total allocation for 2026 to €129.5 million.

Under the scheme, grants of up to €40,000 are available to assist people with disabilities in making necessary modifications to their homes. Older people can apply for grants of up to €10,700 for essential repairs or improvements, while grants of up to €8,000 are available for mobility aids such as stairlifts and access ramps.

Minister Dillon said he had met many recipients in Mayo and had seen first-hand the difference the works can make to people’s lives.

“I have met many recipients here in Mayo and have seen the positive difference that adaptation works have made to their lives at home,” he said.

He also noted that the scheme benefits the local economy by supporting employment for tradespeople carrying out the works.

“It is fantastic to see a 30% funding increase in this grant for 2026, which will deliver 17,000 grant claims for older and disabled people, many of them living in Mayo,” he said.

The minister also praised Mayo County Council for its role in administering the scheme, including assessing applications and carrying out home inspections where adaptations are proposed.

“I am firmly committed to supporting individuals to remain at home and within their own communities and these increased grants will enable more people to do that,” he added.
