The Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre was officially opened by Michael Ring TD
Deputy Michael Ring, TD, opened the newly expanded and upgraded Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre on Friday, May 17, with a large attendance present.
Majella Uí Ghallachobhair, Cathaoirleach of Comhlacht Forbartha Áitiúl Acla (CFÁA), welcomed everybody to the official opening and acknowledged from the outset, all the funders and supporters both at home and across the diaspora, of CFÁA and the Achill Experience over many years.
She particularly thanked Údarás na Gaeltachta, POBAL, the local fishermen, board and staff both past and present and the local residents for their enormous support and contribution to the project.
Terence Dever, CEO of CFÁA, outlined the history of CFÁA and the genesis of the Achill Experience and how it has been brought to where it is today.
The Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre first opened in April 2016 after the Board of CFÁA recognised the need for an all-weather attraction in the area. Since then it has continued to expand and eight years on, phase four of the Achill Experience consists of a newly expanded aquarium and visitor centre with upgraded features and many more creatures, promising fun for all ages.
Speakers at the opening included: Gerry Hassett – Chairperson of BIM North West FLAGS; Daithí O Gallachóir – Regional Manager of the Wild Atlantic Way with Fáilte Ireland; Rita Hopkins – Mayo North East Development Company; Sabina Trench – South West Mayo Development Company; Anna O'Connor – Head of Tourism with Mayo County Council; Cllr Paul McNamara and Deputy Michael Ring, TD.
Fantastic facility
Deputy Michael Ring stated that he was delighted to be invited to officially open the newly expanded Achill Experience describing it as a truly fantastic facility which is testament to the hard work of the Achill Local Development Company and a wonderful community.
“The newly expanded Aquarium and Visitor Centre has new features, many more creatures and is fun for all the family. It is an excellent indoor visitor experience and provides a wonderful choice for visitors and locals alike,” he said.
“The Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre is a very important tourism offering in Achill. The Achill Experience will enable continued visitor growth in Achill, which will have a positive impact on the local economy and employment.
“I would like to once again congratulate all those who have organised and supported this project from the beginning. I wish Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre continued success into the future,” concluded Deputy Michael Ring.
