The Federation of Irish Sport announced county recipients of the 2023 Volunteers in Sport Awards.

Phelim Halligan of Claremorris Ultimate Kickboxing Club, was awarded Mayo County’s 2023 Volunteer in Sport.

Mr Halligan volunteers as a coach every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and is happy to introduce new members to the sport.

For him, the work does not end there; he spends a huge amount of time answering calls and emails, organising fights for club members across Ireland.

A particular focus of Mr Halligan, is the mental well-being of the club’s community.

Mr Halligan is a Fighting for Autism ambassador and a Cycle Against Suicide community buddy, so the club's level of inclusivity is no surprise. He is always there to support all the club’s members.

The dedicated volunteers will be celebrated at a national awards ceremony in Dublin on February 29.

Recognising the depth and breadth of volunteering in sporting communities nationwide, Federation CEO, Mary O’Connor, said behind the scenes, the work of volunteers plays a ‘crucial role in fostering community engagement, promoting physical activity, and driving the success of sporting events nationwide’.

“We are looking forward to celebrating the exceptional contributions made by volunteers in sport from all over the country” she added.

Volunteering in sport contributes an estimated €1.5 billion to the Irish economy each year. This figure underscores the immense social and economic benefits derived from the volunteer's contributions across the Irish sporting landscape.

In addition to the county award winners being recognised at the ceremony, one exceptional individual will be awarded with the overall Outstanding Volunteer Award.

Commenting on the announcement of recipients, the Federations Head of Sport, and member of the judging panel, Graham Russell, said: “The 2023 Volunteers in Sport Awards serve as a reminder of the power of volunteering in sport, celebrating individuals whose unwavering dedication enriches lives, strengthens communities, and encourages a culture of active living”.
