Councillor claims Castlebar New Cemetery Car Park is in a terrible state
The current state of the car park at the new cemetery in Castlebar does not make a good impression for visitors according to a local councillor who has called for it to be upgraded.
Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere told the meeting of the Castlebar Municipal District that the car park looks terrible at the moment and something needs to be done to improve it.
“The state of the car park of the new cemetery is terrible. A lot of people who were at it for funerals were not impressed with it and it doesn't set a good image. The people who are buried there made the town and to have the car park like that is not a good look. We need to have it included in some programme to do it up and have it presentable for everyone involved,” he said.
Cllr Deere also commented that spaces in the new cemetery are filling up fast and urged the council to look at building a cremation wall.
“You can see from the death notices the amount of people going for cremations and it is something we have to look at. The new cemetery is filling up fast and we need to look at it and see where we are at,” he said.
Fianna Fáil councillor Blackie Gavin supported Cllr Deere's call regarding the new cemetery saying that it was filling fast and asked for a report on what the council plan to do with it in the future.
David Mellet, Head of the Castlebar Municipal District said that a previous report on the crematorium wall suggested that it would cost an estimated €20,000 for the wall.
