National Broadband Ireland (NBI), who are rolling out the new high speed fibre broadband network under the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), has announced that engineering survey works for almost 5,700 Mayo premises across the Achill Island, Belmullet and Ballinrobe areas are now complete.
NBI Chief Executive Peter Hendrick said the team “are on the ground” installing the networks, with their aim to deliver it as quickly as possible. He assures that the “rollout is happening at that pace.”
These initial works pave the way for the next stage of deploying the fibre network, including the installation of poles and preparation of ducts.
There are approximately 37,000 premises in Mayo’s Intervention Area (IA), including homes, farms, commercial businesses, and schools. Under the NBP, the county will see an investment of €145M in new high speed fibre broadband. This will enable many areas of life including e-learning, remote monitoring of livestock or equipment, e-health initiatives, energy efficiency, and more.
“Network build works are also in progress in the Killadoon deployment area where more than 1,050 premises will be able to connect to its high-speed fibre broadband network later in 2024.” he continues.
National Broadband Ireland provides regular updates on the overall progress of the rollout which is being delivered on budget and ahead of schedule. To date, over 217,108 premises nationwide can order or pre-order broadband on the NBI network.
7,402 homes, businesses, and farms across County Mayo can now order, or pre-order high-speed, reliable broadband. Out of this number, Hendrick says “This includes over 2,100 premises in Ballina and nearly 1,800 in Newport.”
People living in these areas are encouraged to visit here to see if they can order high-speed connections on the NBI network.
