St Anne's nursing home in Charlestown is being used as emergency accommodation for homeless families
A senior Mayo County Council official has dismissed rumours of a former nursing home in Charlestown being used to house refugees as ‘spurious rumours’.
Tom Gilligan, Mayo County Council’s Director of Services for Housing, told The Mayo News that the St Anne’s in Charlestown is being used to provide emergency accommodation for homeless people.
The nursing home closed in June 2023 with the loss of 39 jobs and is now sheltering homeless families.
Local Sinn Féin county councillor Gerry Murray said he had received representations regarding the potential re-purposing of the property as refugee accommodation.
Cllr Murray told The Mayo News that the facility would have to be closed for a longer period for it to be considered eligible for accommodating refugees.
Speaking at the time of its closure, Director of nursing at St Anne’s, Karen Dewsall, said Inadequate funding under the Fair Deal scheme made it no longer viable for the home to operate.
St Anne’s had 25 residents at the time of its closure and had been run by Kathleen Smyth for four decades.
The residents were subsequently moved to another nursing home.
