Mayo schools receive several awards at BT Young Scientist Exhibition

Mayo schools triumphed at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition this past weekend.

The event took place in Dublin over the weekend where a total of seven awards were won by schools across county Mayo.

Mount St Michael Secondary School in Claremorris were recognised six times across various categories, including Aoibheann Mangan, who won the HRB (Health Research Board) Special award, as well as first place in the Senior Individual Health and Wellbeing category.

Mary Lillibeth Curry Glynn won 2nd place in the Intermediate Health and Wellbeing category, Cassie Grittith Blitger won the Jack Reston Special award, while a trio of Meta Alisauskaite, Leen Jomaa and Vanesa Liepa-Samoška were highly commended in the Health and Wellbeing category. Teacher Stephanie Hogan was awarded the teacher of excellence award for the Health and Wellbeing category.

Meanwhile, St Joseph's Secondary School in Castlebar took home one award. This came from Beth Scully, who placed third in the Junior Individual Category.

Managing Director of BT Ireland, Shay Walsh, concluded by saying: “Being able to see first-hand the creativity and innovation of Ireland’s future leaders has been a real privilege."

The exhibition’s overall winner was 17-year-old Sean O'Sullivan, a fifth year student from Colaiste Chairain in Croom, Co Limerick, whose project looked at Artificial Intelligence.
