A solid seven-goal display helped Mayo to victory over a club selection that performed well but barely got near the opposition goalmouth in and end-of-year charity game this afternoon.
With thirteen unique scorers, four first half goals gave Kevin McStay’s men exactly they start they needed against a club selection that certainly had their good moments but fell victim to a rip-roaring Mayo finish.
Mayo were off the mark after less than 40 seconds through Paul Towey, whose point set the tempo for an opening ten minutes which saw the teams level on three occasions.
After that, Kevin McStay’s men gained the upper hand in each third of the field.
With the kind of counter-attacking firepower the Club All-Stars would only dream of, Mayo hit the first of four first-half goals through Paul Towey.
The impressive midfield duo of Donnacha McHugh and Jordan Flynn combined for Flynn to net through the lámha in the 18th minute.
With Rory Brickenden doing an excellent job on full-forward Aidan O’Shea, Mayo annulled a three-point All-Star salvo with 2-2 to conclude the half, with the goals coming from Aghamore’s Tom O’Flaherty and Ballintubber veteran Cillian O’Connor.
The club selection’s net went unshaken until the 49th minute when substitute Kuba Callaghan got their fifth goal of the afternoon.
Late cúls from Paddy Durcan and Eoghan McLaughlin applied the icing to the cake as Kevin McStay’s men continue preparations for their upcoming FBD Championship opener against London.
All proceeds from today’s game went towards the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
