Children walking to school long George's Street in Newport
WORKS on of the most controversial streets in are set to continue in early January.
Documents were recently submitted to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) with a tender date set for December 19.
Contractors are expected to be on site in late January or early February in 2024.
Speaking at the December meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Mulroy called for clarity on a start date for the remaining works.
Cllr Mulroy said that these works ‘would need to be done and dusted’ by the date indicated.
In July, councillors were informed that ‘all going well’ work on a new 200 metre long footpath along the left hand side would begin in September and take four weeks to complete.
Work has recently commenced on the right-hand side of the street, which has been previously described as ‘a death trap’.
Local people and representatives have frequently called for remedial works on the narrow footpath along the street, which poses a danger to pedestrians.
The street becomes even more dangerous during summertime when Newport sees increased traffic from tourists.
Padraic Walsh, Head of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, said he would follow up regarding the timeline for the appointment of the contractor and the commencement of remaining works.
