The funeral of an Inishbiggle man who died tragically on the island on Friday evening will take place in Ballycroy on Wednesday afternoon.

Christy Henry died on Friday evening when the car he was driving was submerged in water after it veered off the road into a lake on the island.

The incident occurred at around 8.30pm on Friday evening and despite the best efforts of local people and members of the emergency services to rescue Mr Henry, he was pronounced dead a short time after. His body was brought to Mayo University Hospital where a post mortem took place to determine the cause of death.

Inishbiggle is located between Achill Island and Ballycroy and is home to less than 20 people. Mr Henry was one of the leaders of the island community and heavily involved in organising the annual Inishbiggle festival which brings people onto the island every summer.

Mr Henry is survived by his sister, Mary (London) and brother, PJ (Foxford), sisters-in-law, Patricia and Fran, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

He will be reposing in Lavelle's Funeral Home, Cashel Achill on Tuesday evening from 5pm to 6.30pm with removal on Wednesday morning to the Church of Holy Family, Ballycroy for funeral Mass at 12 noon and burial afterwards in the local cemetery.

Gardaí investigating the cause of the accident had appealed to anyone who may have information in relation to this collision to contact them at Westport Garda Station on 098 50230, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
