THE old order in Mayo ladies club football has been consigned to history after Westport secured a magnificent win over 22-time county champions Carnacon this afternoon.

Magnificent from start to finish, Westport inflicted the kind of defeat that Carnacon dealt to all pretenders for over two decades.

The omens were positive for the Covies from the moment the pacy Fionnuala McLaughlin crashed in their first goal in the eighth minute.

Through razor-sharp attacking play and an awesome work ethic, Neil Chambers’ women pushed further ahead before the irrepressible Noirin Moran won a penalty in the 26th minute.

Carnacon lost the experienced Michelle McGing to a yellow card as a result, and when Aoife Staunton buried the ball in the top left corner it was effectively curtains for the six-time All-Ireland winners.

Ten points ahead at the break, the unmerciful Westport got another goal through Saoirse Ludden shortly after the restart.

The corner-forward added her second three-pointer in the 41st minute when she fisted the ball home after Katie Chambers found her with a clever kick-pass.

The hosts added another four points before the end, with Carnacon’s only point of the second half coming from an excellent Hannah Prendergast score three minutes from time.

Westport meet Knockmore in the county final on Saturday in a repeat of the Division 1 league final.

There will be a full report plus reaction from Westport’s Neil Chambers and Noirin Moran in Tuesday’s print edition of The Mayo News.
