Mayo Deputy Alan Dillon has called on the government to accelerate its plans to host major international events in light of recent developments.

Deputy Dillon, who is also Fine Gael spokesperson on Tourism and Sport, said Turkey’s official withdrawal from the bid to host the European Football Championships in 2028, coupled with the joint bid of Ireland and the UK, presents a unique opportunity for our nations to showcase their capabilities on the global stage.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Deputy Dillon stated: “The withdrawal of Turkey from the bid to host the Euros is disappointing for them, but a fantastic opportunity for Ireland and the UK. With our collective expertise and passion for sports, this joint bid has the potential to deliver a truly exceptional tournament. It is now imperative that we accelerate our government's plans to ensure we are fully prepared to host this major event and others in the future.”
Deputy Dillon emphasised the numerous benefits hosting such events would bring to both countries, including boosting tourism, promoting economic growth, and enhancing our international reputation.

He also highlighted the chance for Ireland and the UK to demonstrate their unity and ability to collaborate on the global stage.

“Our nations have a rich history in sports and a proven track record of hosting successful events. By accelerating our efforts, we can not only create an unforgettable experience for fans and athletes but also stimulate economic growth in various sectors,” Deputy Dillon added.
The joint bid by Ireland and the UK promises to bring football fans from all over the world together, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and cultural exchange.

Deputy Dillon stressed the need for meticulous planning, collaboration with local communities, and investment in infrastructure to ensure the smooth execution of these events. “I am calling on the government to work closely with sports organisations, local communities, and relevant stakeholders to expedite our preparations. Let us seize this moment to showcase our nations’ hospitality and passion for sports,” Deputy Dillon concluded.
