The late Peter McDermott
A MAN who died following an alleged assault in Westport in the early hours of Sunday morning has been named as Peter McDermott.
A native of Co Leitrim, Mr McDermott had been living in Murrisk for many years and was understood to have interests in construction and farming.
The assault occurred at around 1.20am on Saturday morning following an altercation in the vicinity of High Street in Westport town centre.
Mr McDermott was taken to Mayo University Hospital where he was placed on life support before he passed away yesterday evening (Sunday).
A post-mortem is due to be carried out either later today or tomorrow.
Local county councillor Christy Hyland has described the incident as 'a tragedy for all concerned'.
A man in his 20s who was arrested following an assault in Westport has since been released by gardaí.
A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions following the man's release.
Gardaí in Westport are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward.
They are asking pedestrians or road users who were in the vicinity of High Street between 1am and 2am on Saturday morning last to contact them.
