WESTPORT QUAY was painted in patriotic blue and yellow as the local Ukrainian community descended to mark 32nd anniversary of their country’s independence.
Traditional Ukrainian music, artwork, clothing and cuisine were all celebrated by over 100 Ukrainians who gathered at The Towers Bar & Restaurant to celebrate their Independence Day.
A day of rest and celebration in their native country, Independence Day has taken on a particular poignance for Ukrainians forced to flee their country following Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.
The West Mayo area is now home to over 1,000 Ukrainians, many of whom gathered at The Quay to celebrate their culture, history and traditions.
Yesterday (Thursday) was the second such Ukrainian Independence Day gathering to take place in Westport.
Local county councillor Christy Hyland re-affirmed his solidarity with Ukrainian refugees, stating that the ‘hearts and minds’ of Westport people were with local Ukrainian community.
Kseniya Mairboroda, a member of the Ukrainian community, thanked the people of Westport for being so accommodating and welcoming to Ukrainian refugees.
“We’d like you to know that we do not smile that often, and sometimes it’s not an easy thing for us to do, but when we do smile at you it’s the most sincere smile in the world. And very often it’s because of you, dear people of Westport, we thank you for that,” she said.
“Since the arrival of the first group of Ukrainians, volunteers from Westport Welcomes Ukraine have been doing everything to make us feel at home.”
Judy Casey, a member of Westport Welcomes Ukraine, thanked all those who came to the event.
She also thanked the people of Westport for their ‘kindness and support and patience’ as well as Tom Bourke, owner of The Towers, for hosting the gathering.
“I want to thank all of our Ukrainian friends for your strength and courage, to bring your families to safety, to leave the comfort of your own homes and your own country. You have show us what bravery means. The heroes in Ukraine and the heroes here in Westport,” said Ms Casey.
Speaking in Ukrainian through a translator, she added: “Keep fighting, you’re sure to win. God helps you on your fight. For fame and freedom much with you, right is on your side. Glory to Ukraine!”
The event was also attended by a Ukrainian soldier who is due to return to the front lines shortly.
We will have further coverage of the Ukrainian Independence Day celebrations in Westport in Tuesday’s print edition of The Mayo News.
