PREPARATORY work on the Main Street in Newport is expected to take place in the next week after €100,000 was allocated for the restoration of the street, which has been compared to a bog road.
The street through Newport was severely damaged by the frost during the cold weather last winter which resulted in it being riddled with potholes. The potholes are filled in on a regular basis by Council workers but the amount of heavy traffic going through the town has resulted in them reappearing within days.
To make matters worse the hot weather over the last week resulted in the tar melting on the road which made it difficult for pedestrians to cross the road without getting tar on their shoes.
The street is part of the N59 which comes under the responsibility of the National Roads Authority and last week it was revealed at the Special Policy Committee meeting on Roads that the NRA had allocated €100,000 to repair the damage. Mr Joe Beirne, Director of Services with Mayo County Council told the meeting that the Council would be undertaking preparatory works on the road to move piping in the next week before the main restoration work begins on the road.
The news was welcomed by local councillor Michael Holmes who told The Mayo News that the road could not be left as it is for much longer.
