BOXING Ray Moylette of St Anne’s Boxing Club, Westport has qualified for the national Senior (Elite) 64kg final.
Moylette into senior final after impressive victory
Daniel Carey
RAY Moylette of St Anne’s Boxing Club, Westport will take on Stephen Donnelly (All Saints) in the final of the National Senior (Elite) Boxing Championships in the 64kg category next Saturday. The World Youth champion was 4-0 down in the first round of his semi-final last Friday against Philip Sutcliffe from Crumlin BC. The Dubliner was the reigning champion, having beaten Olympian John Joe Joyce in last year’s final. However, Moylette turned the bout around in spectacular fashion, having cut the deficit to 4-3 by the end of round one. Things got even better for the Islandeady native in round two, as he put in a phenomenal 30-second period and led 8-5 by the end of a brilliant second. Both boxers ceded two points apiece after receiving public warnings in the third, leaving Moylette 10-7 up. Sutcliffe got one further point back, but Moylette defended and held on for a 10-8 victory. It was a world away from his quarter-final win, where he whitewashed Belfast’s Ian Baker 10-0. Saturday could be a very special night for the St Anne’s Club, as Moylette’s girlfriend Sharon McGing takes on Amanda McLoughlin (Bray) in the Novice 54kg final. It is hoped to run a bus from Westport to Dublin provided there is sufficient interest – contact any club member for details. The Westport club picked up yet another national title last weekend, as Tara Keane was crowned 64kg champion without a contest. Meanwhile, in the quarter-finals of the Novice Championships held last Saturday, David Hoban (Eagle Boxing Club, Westport) beat Gerard Healy (Gleann) 7-4 at 81kg, while Peter Cassidy (Ballyhaunis) beat Niall Forde (Eagle) 10-2 at 91+kg. Also at 91+kg, Eagle’s Rafa Bronkal lost to Paul Courtney (Lucan), with the referee stopping the contest in round three. Shane Andrew (Geesala) lost to Aaron Donovan (Dungarvan) 3-2, Thomasz Kunel (Geesala) lost 2-0 to Jaie Barnes (Saviours Crystal) at 81kg, while Szymon Lewczuk (Geesala) went out in round three to John Egan (Drimnagh).
