Three sent for trial after Westport house violence
THREE PEOPLE involved in a violent late-night fracas at a Westport house on December 11 last are set to be sent to the Circuit Court for trial. The violent incident culminated in a young woman receiving a serious facial injury. It also led to a garda barricading himself into a room with an injured party and a small child, while garda reinforcements were deployed from Castlebar. Appearing before Judge Mary Devins at last week’s sitting of Westport District Court were 19-year-old Stephen Collins of 6, McBride Terrace, Leenane Road, Westport , his partner Kathleen Connors (22) of the same address and a young person, who, for legal reasons, cannot be named. The three faced a number of charges, which included violent assault, criminal damage to a garda car and obstruction of a garda. Fresh charges were also brought before Judge Devins in respect of the young person relating to incidents that occurred on July 30 last. Last week, the youth was further charged with possession of a firearm, alleged theft and assault causing harm on this date. Both the youth and Ms Connors were granted bail. Stringent conditions, including a curfew, were imposed on Ms Connors. She was also ordered to abstain from alcohol and other controlled substances, not to interfere with witnesses, or have any contact with Stephen Collins. Judge Devins permitted gardaí to re-enter the case at 24 hours notice. The case was adjourned to February 4 next for service of the Book of Evidence.
