A Ballinrobe soldier killed in the Lebanon is one of six soldiers who will be remembered at a new memorial in Galway.
Memorial to remember soldiers of the west
SIX soldiers from the west of Ireland killed while serving on peacekeeping duties are to be honoured by the erection of a new memorial in Galway. Five of the six lost their lives in Lebanon, including Corporal Fintan Heneghan, aged 28, of Bowgate Street, Ballinrobe. Fintan, a son of the late councillor Jack and Nellie Heneghan, was killed on active service with the 64th battalion, on March 21, 1989. His lorry was blown up by a landmine, set by Believers Resistance Hezbollah guerillas, and two of his fellow-soldiers, Private Mannix Armstrong, Sligo and Thomas Walsh, Tubbercurry were also killed. His memorial will be located beside the Garrison Church, Renmore Barracks, Galway. Paul Connaughton, Secretary, Post 30 of the Irish United Nations Veterans’ Association said it would cost between €15,000 and €20,000 to erect the memorial, and the Association in now engaged in raising the money needed to bring the undertaking to fruition. A bank account has been set up at AIB in Lynch’s Castle, Galway, the sort code and account number is 93-70-96, 14533341, under the name of Post 30 IUNVA Memorial Garden.
