AMBITIOUS plans are under way to replace and improve the Foxford BrΡid - an iconic structure just outside the town of Foxford.
The current 59-year old wooden structure - a cross known as the Foxford BrΡid - is in danger of collapse and the Admiral Brown Society and the people of Foxford have launched ambitious plans to upgrade the landmark.
“We are dedicated to replacing the old cross with a modern steel structure powered by solar energy which will carry on the tradition of a ‘cross on BrΡid’ for another 60 years or more,” said Oliver Murphy of the organising committee.
“So many ‘Foxfordians’, local and exiles, consider the cross to be an integral part of the memory of their childhood, climbing to the summit on a summer’s day and, many years later, bringing their own children and grandchildren to stand at the foot of the cross and appreciate the view of Foxford and the stunning scenery that surrounds it including Clew Bay, Killala Bay and Neiphin.”
As part of the plans the old cross will be carefully removed and re-erected on a new site at Craggagh cemetery where those who were involved in the first cross will be remembered. Also envisaged is the creation of a safe walkway from the nearby road to the BrΡid.
The cross has been lit in recent years by local men Kevin Reape and Larry Murray on Good Friday, creating an impressive sight for locals and visitors to appreciate.
To fundraise for the project, the organising committee are organising a patron’s scheme. For €100 per name it is planned that a granite memorial will be placed at the foot of the new cross with the patrons’ names engraved.
