Man tries to evade Gardaí by swimming river
Claremorris A MAN who evaded Gardaí by running through fields and swimming across a river was arrested yesterday (Monday) morning and is being detained by Gardaí in relation to criminal activity in Mayo and Sligo. The 22-year-old, who is a foreign national with an address in the south of the country, tried to evade Gardaí after turning away from a routine Garda checkpoint at 2.50pm on Sunday afternoon. The gardaí pursued the Opel Vectra car and it was found at a Vivo filling station outside Claremorris but the man fled again. The car was later discovered in the Garryduff area of Claremorris where it was abandoned as he took off across the fields on foot. The man was pursued by gardaí and escaped arrest by swimming across a river. Gardaí set up checkpoints and searched the area and the man was found in a field in Meelickmore, Claremorris at 9.20am on Monday morning. A Garda spokesperson told The Mayo News that the man was arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and was detained under the same act. He is currently in custody and is being questioned in relation to criminal activity in the Sligo and Mayo area.
