KILLALA have formed a Chamber of Commerce following a call from the business people of the community to do ‘something positive’ for the town.
“A lot of businesses from the town came together and decided we should do something positive to attract business and development into Killala and into the surrounding areas,” said chairperson Sean Hannick.
A total of 21 members have already joined including Ambrose Blaine, assistant chairperson; Niall Kerrigan, PRO; Aiden Sweeney, treasurer and Peter McDonnell, secretary.
Mr Hannick said that due to the current economic climate where the construction industry had slowed down and the fact that Killala had not attracted new industries in recent years, it was hugely important to work together to attract industry and create employment. He said the chamber hopes to work with existing community organisations. Killala Chamber of Commerce have already voiced their support for the Mayo Power Ltd development of an electricity generating plant proposed for the former Asahi site outside Killala.
Killala’s newly formed Chamber of Commerce has seen the number of such chambers in the county grow to eight. The chamber formed on August 14, last and intends to hold monthly meetings.
There are seven other Chambers of Commerce in the county in Erris, Ballina, Ballyhaunis, Castlebar, Claremorris, Swinford and Westport. From time to time they come together to support a project likely to bring benefits to the whole county, the Western Rail Corridor being a case in point.
