Balla couple die within days of each other
Michael Commins
A WELL-KNOWN Balla couple died within 12 days of each other, leaving friends and family in shock. The passing of Joe and Winnie Leavy in such a short space of time has saddened their many friends around the region where they were both held in such high regard. Winnie (nee Hyland) had been in ill health for some time and she died peacefully in Mayo General Hospital. Her husband Joe, a native of Westmeath, who had lived in Balla for around 50 years, took ill and died suddenly while with friends in Balla town last week. News of his passing came as a great shock as he had been in good health all through. Joe was the green-keeper at Balla Golf Club for many years and was widely known to all visitors to the club. He was especially renowned for his courteous manner and helpful nature. The large and representative attendances at both of their funerals reflected the regard in which they were held by the people of the district. Joe and Winnie were laid to rest in Balla cemetery following the celebration of their respective Requiem Masses in St Cronan’s Church. They are survived by their four daughters, Kathleen, Mary, Una and Helen, son Billy, in-laws, grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and friends.
