Civic offices not up to scratch – Flynn

There is mould growing on the walls of the Westport Civic Offices and it’s not an appropriate space for workers to operate in.
That was the damning verdict delivered by Cllr Peter Flynn at yesterday’s (Monday) meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District in Belmullet.
The Fine Gael councillor said the employees working in the building deserved better and looked forward to the problem reaching a speedy and suitable conclusion.
“There are wonderful municipal offices here in Belmullet, in Claremorris, in Ballina and Castlebar, yet there is mould growing on the walls in Westport. That’s not good enough. Something has to be done very quickly to resolve this,” he said.
Flynn was speaking on a point raised by Cllr Brendan Mulroy, who posed a question about the current status of the Convent building in Westport, which was purchased some time ago by the council.
“The Convent building is something which should be developed for the town and is a project we need to work on urgently. It’s a great location and an iconic site in Westport and I think we need to put a workshop in place to get the project moving as soon as possible,” said Cllr Mulroy.
Cllr Mulroy’s suggestion was greeted positivily by Director of Services, Catherine McConnell who agreed with his suggestion.
“I think a workshop is a great idea. The building is a great asset for Westport and we look forward to working on this project together.”
Her words were welcomed by all councillors and a workshop will be convened after the summer break.
