Delia is Mayo’s ‘Lady on the Bridge’

MAYO supporters travelling to matches in Croke Park this year have been fascinated by the ‘Lady on the Bridge’ near Maynooth who waves her Mayo flag to all traffic coming in the motorway from the West.
The intrigue about the flag-waving Mayo supporter made it to the national airwaves on RTÉ Radio One when the lady was identified as Delia Heneghan, whose people moved from Mayo to the Kildare-Meath borders many years ago. Delia spoke on the Ray D’Arcy Show and the programme was inundated with messages of goodwill.
Whatever the weather, Delia will be perched on the bridge over the motorway again on Sunday. She loves when supporters acknowledge her presence with flashing the lights and beeping the horn.
People are also asked to exercise caution as many drivers tend to slow down on the approach to the bridge. Delia’s bond with the land of her people knows no bounds. Far away from the land of the shamrock and heather, she espoused that longing in the hearts of all Mayo supporters that our day will come. To use the title of a song composed by Padraig Stephens of The Saw Doctors, ‘Good Girl, Delia’!
