THE N17 outside Claremorris remains closed this afternoon, following a fatal traffic accident which has claimed three lives. The accident occurred around 1pm near the townland of Lisduff and it is reported that two adults and a child, all believed to be from north Mayo, were critically injured and subsequently pronounced dead following the collision. It is understood the incident involved a car, in which the three people who died, were travelling, and a truck. The stretch of road where where the crash occurred is known as an accident blackspot.
A forensic examination of the scene, which is about a mile-and-a-half from Claremorris, is continuing. There was widespread shock across the county when news of the tragedy broke this afternoon. Mayo County Council held a minute’s silence and expressed sympathy at their monthly meeting in Castlebar.
This is a developing story. For full details see tomorrow’s Mayo News.
