With tickets for the All-Ireland football final at a premium, ticketless fans will be able to create their own big-match atmosphere in Castlebar, with the final to be shown on a big screen at The Mall.
The Spencer Street Traders wrote to Mayo County Council seeking permission to put up a big screen in the Mall, which will show the All-Ireland final between Mayo and Dublin on Sunday, September 17.
A big screen was installed last Sunday in Eyre Square in Galway City, where a crowd of close to 5,000 people watched Galway defeat Waterford in last Sunday’s All-Ireland hurling final. A similar big screen was also erected in the Apple Market in Waterford City.
Mr John McHale, the Head of the Castlebar Municipal District, informed councillors at this afternoon’s (Thursday) municipal district meeting that the Spencer Street Traders were seeking to install a 24-metre wide screen to show the All-Ireland final.
The group contacted Big Screen Hire, a company based in Mullingar, who had installed the big screen in the Apple Market in Waterford City. Mr McHale added that if The Mall was not deemed suitable, the group proposed to erect the big screen at the car park close to the old Tennis Club as a back-up plan
The councillors agreed that the suggestion was a good idea and gave the proposal their backing.
