Pensioner charged with 12 counts of rape

A pensioner appeared before Castlebar District Court where he was charged with 12 counts of rape dating back to the 1970s.


A PENSIONER last week appeared before Castlebar District Court where he was charged with 12 counts of rape dating back to the 1970s.
The 77-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reason, was arrested and charged last Wednesday and brought before Castlebar District Court. The court heard that the man is charged with 12 counts of rape and five counts of indecent assault. The incidents are alleged to have taken place from 1972 to 1980.
Inspector Paudie O’Shea told Judge Mary Devins that the accused man made no reply to any of the charges against him.
He explained that gardaí had no objection to bail subject to conditions. Some of the conditions included the man continuing to reside at his current address and have no contact with the injured parties or witnesses.
Mr Thomas Walsh, solicitor for the accused man said that his client was willing to abide by the conditions.
Judge Devins remanded the man on continuing bail to appear before Castlebar District Court on March 7 for the preparation and service of the book of evidence.
