Mayo GAA chief wants critics to ‘talk things up’

MAYO GAA Chairman Mike Connelly has called on critics of the County Board to ‘talk them up for a change’ and acknowledge the good work being done by the volunteer officers.
Speaking at the launch of the new Mayo GAA coaching initiative last Friday night, Connelly also confirmed that a Mayo GAA Commercial Manager appointment will be made — but only when the time is right.
“You hear a lot of chat going on at the minute about a Commercial Manager. . at the end of the day, we’re not stupid, we do know we’re running a business,” the Hollymount native told The Mayo News.
“But it’s all about timing, and I’m not going to rush into something that we’re just not ready for.
“We have an awful lot of work to do, but when we are ready, and we will be at some stage, and it might come sooner rather than later. .
“But when that day does come we will be recruiting, there’s no doubt or question about that. Because the Mayo GAA brand is a massive, massive brand and that’s what it’s going to take.
“This is a business we’re running now, and we’d like for people to have a small bit of patience.
“And for the people that are on social media, to them I would say, ‘Hold your powder’.
“And talk it up for a change.
“There are a lot of people here in a voluntary capacity, running a business with a turnover of €3m to €4m, who are in Castlebar three to four nights a week.
“They don’t put in for a euro of expenses, and all they want is to see support and to see people talking them up for a change. And I think we all need to talk each other up for a change.”
