GPs have strongly objected to the HSE decision to withdraw breast cancer services from MGH.
Mayo GPs angry at HSE cancer service decision
REACTION THE Mayo Faculty of the Irish College of General Practitioners have strongly objected to the decision of the HSE to withdraw breast cancer services from Mayo General Hospital by 2010. On behalf of Mayo GPs, Faculty Secretary Dr Bríd O’Malley has expressed dismay at the decision of the State health board to remove an ‘essential service’, resulting in all breast cancer patients travelling to University College Hospital, Galway for diagnosis and treatment. “A full service, comprising a multi-disciplinary team of experts, under the leadership of Mr Kevin Barry, Consultant Breast Surgeon, is available at MGH. This expert team maintains the highest multi-disciplinary care which meets all international standards for a top-class breast care service,” said Dr Bríd O’Malley. “As practitioners, we have a readily available service to us at present and feel it is unacceptable for this service to be taken away from the people of Mayo,” added Dr O’Malley.
