MAYO GAA chiefs have decided to appeal the proposed one-game suspension arising from Kevin Keane’s red card in last Saturday’s All-Ireland SFC quarter-final win over Donegal.
“Kevin is entitled to a hearing and we will be using our right to appeal the proposed suspension,” Mayo GAA Secretary Vincent Neary confirmed to The Mayo News this evening (Wednesday).
“It’s a crucial stage in the championship and we would like to give every member of our panel every chance of playing in an All-Ireland semi-final.”
Keane, who had only come on as a substitute ninety seconds earlier, was shown a straight red card by referee David Gough in injury-time for clashing with Donegal full-forward Michael Murphy.
Gough subsequently reported the Mayo defender for a striking offence in his official match report, leading to the CCC proposing an automatic one-match ban that would rule Keane out of the All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin on Sunday, August 30.
Vincent Neary also explained that Croke Park had been informed of Mayo’s wish to appeal the proposed suspension, and that the Central Hearings Committee were likely to convene to adjudicate on the matter inside the next week.
