GMIT appointments

Two high profiles roles at the GMIT campus in Castlebar have been filled this week.

High profile Mayo appointments to GMIT

WESTPORT resident Dr Barbara Burns has been appointed Head of Centre at the Castlebar Campus of GMIT, while Kiltimagh native Mr Michael Gill is the new Head of the Department of Business and Technology.
Dr Burns takes over the position of Head of Centre from Dr Katie Sweeney, who was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Mayo Vocational Education Committee last year. Prior to this appointment, Dr Burns has been a lecturer in Business at the Castlebar campus for the past ten years. She has served on government and university advisory groups and is a past international director of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
She has also worked as a consultant in research, project management, manufacturing and industry and worked in a wide variety of technical and business fields ranging from solar energy to aircraft. Her bachelor and doctorate are in the field of social psychology.
Mr Michael Gill holds a Bachelor of Commerce from NUI Galway and a Postgraduate Diploma of Professional Accounting from the Michael Smurfit Business School. Mr Gill trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Pricewaterhouse Coopers (formerly Coopers & Lybrand) and worked for a time as a taxation manager in KPMG, Galway.
He joined GMIT in September 1998 as a lecturer in finance and in 2003 was appointed Acting Head of Department in Hotel & Catering Management. Prior to his appointment to GMIT Castlebar, Mr Gill completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Education. He has lectured for the Institute of Taxation and the Institute of Accounting Technicians in Ireland.
