O’Mahony to be offered Mayo hotseat

John O’Mahony will be asked to become the manager of the Mayo Senior football team this week.
O’Mahony, who returned from Boston yesterday (Tuesday) after managing Connacht in their Inter-Provincial final defeat to Leinster, is set to hear from Mayo County Board Chairman James Waldron in the very near future whereupon Waldron will offer O’Mahony the post vacated by Mickey Moran on Tuesday night of last week.
Speaking to The Mayo News last night Waldron said he had received numerous representations from clubs and individuals to enquire of O’Mahony’s intentions.John O’Mahony will be asked to become the manager of the Mayo Senior football team this week.
Waldron said that the inquires surfaced in light of last Thursday night’s Sports Talkshop on Mid West Radio which O’Mahony co-hosts. When the issue of his interest in the vacancy came up for discussion O’Mahony said it would be wrong for him to make any declarations considering he had not been asked as of then.   
“John O’Mahony was asked what his position is on the job and he said he hadn’t been asked. Since then I have had a lot of representations from clubs and from individuals asking me what the situation and the situation now is that I will be asking John O’Mahony what his position is when he gets back from the Railway Cup,” Waldron confirmed to The Mayo News.
O’Mahony, who managed Mayo to the All-Ireland final in 1989 and also managed Mayo U21’s to All-Ireland success in 1983, is the best man for the job according to James Waldron.
”If we are looking for someone with a CV full of success then there is no one else in the country with one like John’s in terms of both coaching county and club teams. John has won Connacht titles with Mayo, Galway and Leitrim, two All-Ireland Senior titles with Galway,  an All-Ireland U21 with Mayo and you only have to look at his most recent achievement, in helping Ballaghaderreen to a County Senior final, to see what he has got,” stated Waldron.
Waldron also added that O’Mahony’s candidacy for Fine Gael in next year’s General Election could work in tandem with managing Mayo.
“They probably could go hand in hand all right,” said Waldron. “I know there was something similar done by a Wexford hurling manager (Tony Dempsey) a few years back.”
Meanwhile, one of the men reported as being part of a dream management team being set up to replace Mickey Moran has dismissed such a possibility. Pat Holmes was identified as a probable selector along with Martin Carney with O’Mahony as manager in The Sunday Independent. However Holmes ruled himself out of such a position.
“I won’t be involved in Senior Inter-County management next year, I can assure you of that. I simply don’t have the time between work commitments and family commitments. Myself, Noel (Connelly) and Micheál (Collins) have been reappointed to the U21 job and I will be spending a lot of time at that.”
