Mayo County Council is holding two free talks on healthy meal planning this week.
Food for thought with Mayo County Council
THE average Irish family throws out approximately €700 worth of food per year. This week Mayo County Council aim to help reduce this waste by holding two free talks on meal planning. The talks, which take place in Castlebar and Belmullet this Thursday, will offer people tips on planning healthy meals for their families. Guest speaker is Home Economist and founder of ‘Sian’s Plan’, Sian Breslin.
The busy mother of three will talk about meal planning and giving advice on quick and easy healthy recipes and tips on shopping and storing food. This in turn will help families to cut down on the amount of food that they throw out each week.
The first of the talks will take the form of a coffee morning in Àras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet from 9.45am and parents are encouraged to avail of the talk after doing the school run. The second talk will take place as a coffee evening in Lough Lannagh Village, Castlebar at 7.30pm and again is open to the general public.
Get organised
Sharon Cameron, Environment Awareness Officer has organised the talks and encourages the public to attend the talks which will be just over an hour in duration.
“The beginning of a new year is always a good time to get organised. With our busy lives many of us struggle with getting healthy family meals prepared and as a result we tend to buy food that we never eat which ends up in the bin. Sian Breslin has a great practical way of helping families cut down on food waste by better meal planning. We are delighted to have Sian in Mayo and we encourage the public to avail of the talks,” said Ms Cameron.
The talks are also of interest to home economics teachers and secondary school students studying home economics.
