Public warned to get ready for storm-force winds along the north-western seaboard in the coming days
Coastal communities warned to expect high winds

The Mayo public have been warned to get ready for the possibility of storm force winds in the coming days after Met Éireann issued a yellow warning for counties along the north-western seaboard.
This week is expected to be ‘very unsettled’ according to Met Éireann with heavy wind and rain expected on Wednesday. Motorists in the west were also warned to be aware of the possibility of snow and ice, especially on higher ground with gusty northwestern winds meaning temperatures will drop. A yellow warning is defined by Met Éireann as an alert to notify those who are at risk because of their location and/or activity, and to allow them to take preventative action. The weather conditions do not pose an immediate threat to the general population, but only to those exposed to risk by nature of their location and/or activity. The Achill Coast Guard unit have warned the public on their Facebook page to avoid coastal areas on Wednesday as winds are predicted to reach Violent Storm Force 11 and onshore waves may reach up to 16 metres.
“The winds alone cause a serious risk of structural damage - combined with the swells - the coast line is not a place to be, as in doing so could lead to other lives having to be put at risk to save yours,” the coast guard unit warned.
