CHARLESTOWN woman Breege Mulvaney was presented with the Mayo Carer of the Year award at a ceremony in Kiltimagh on Tuesday last.
Breege, who is a carer to her 23-year-old son James who has Down Syndrome and diabetes, told The Mayo News yesterday (Monday) that she initially thought the news of the award was a joke.
“I thought it was somebody joking with me. I didn’t know I was nominated at all and I rang my daughter Cliona who nominated me and she said that she had sent in a letter a few weeks before,” said Breege.
The nomination for Breege called her ‘inspirational’ and said ‘she is an amazing woman of strength and character’. It continued saying Breege and James are ‘best friends’ and that Breege is ‘always thinking of others, especially James.’
Breege and husband Michael found out James, who is also a twin, had Down Syndrome when he was four months old.
Speaking about James’ reaction to the news that Breege was awarded the prestigious title, Breege said her son has been telling everyone the great news.
The Mulvaney family are now looking forward to travelling to Dublin on November 12 for special ceremony honouring award recipients from across the country.
One family carer will be chosen as Ireland’s Carer of the Year 2014 and the Young Carer of the Year 2014 will also be presented.
The awards ceremony will be hosted by broadcasters and patrons of The Carers Association Mary Kennedy and Marty Whelan.
“It’s a lovely day to look forward to and I hope the best person will come out of it on the day. It was just lovely to come out of Mayo.”
Breege, who continues to provide full time care for James while facing her own health issues after being diagnosed with cancer, said the award came at the ‘right time’ and has given her a boost.
“I got a good lot of good wishes from all over the place,” said the humble carer.
The Carers of the Year Awards are sponsored by Tunstall Emergency Response.
