MEMBERS of An Garda SíochΡna bid farewell to their colleague and friend Sergeant Christine Quinn, as the ‘kind and sincere’ garda was laid to rest at the weekend.
The funeral of Sgt Quinn of Blackfort Manor, Castlebar and formerly of The Hill, Conagher, Milltown, Tuam, Co Galway, took place in St Joseph’s Church in her hometown on Saturday morning last. Sgt Quinn passed away following a short illness.
Sgt Quinn served as a member of An Garda Siochana for 24 years starting her career in Monaghan. Since joining in 1990, the very popular member of the force served in Dublin, taught Irish at the Garda Training College, served in Belmullet, and was then promoted to Sergeant on moving to Castlebar.
She was then moved once again to Monaghan for a time, then on to Cong and back to Castlebar where she was promoted to Sergeant in charge and finally to Sergeant of Castlebar’s traffic corp where she served until she became ill.
Superintendant Pat Diskin of Castlebar Garda Station said he and his colleagues were deeply saddened on Christine’s passing and described her as a ‘leader’ who was ‘highly respected by her colleagues’ and ‘highly regarded by the communities she served’.
“She always insisted on the highest of standards and made sure people were treated with respect and dignity. She gave freely of her time and coached members of the force and had a great affection for teaching the Irish language. She will be sincerely missed by all,” said Supt Diskin, adding that she also made a ‘huge contribution’ to road safety.
Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council paid tribute to Sgt Quinn and said she was an ‘inspiration’ who was ‘terrifically dedicated’.
“She provided this office with advice, encouragement and great support,’ said Mr Gibbons.
Sgt Quinn is survived by her mother Teresa, five sisters Mary, Breege, Catherine, Eileen and Michelle, brothers-in-law, extended family and many friends.
