DON’T break out the barbeques and sun loungers just yet. Despite Met Éireann issuing a yellow status weather warning indicating a heatwave, Mayo won’t fair as well as it’s eastern counterparts according to Meteorologist John Eagleton.
Speaking to The Mayo News yesterday, Mr Eagleton said though it will be ‘very warm’ around the county this week, Mayo will be ‘prone to damp weather with thundery showers at times’.
Today (Tuesday) is expected to be cloudy in coastal areas of the county but will be generally sunny. It will be humid for the remainder of the week with conditions ‘very mild’ at night.
Asked if Mayo will break any temperature records like those recorded in Furnace, Newport in June, and last summer, Mr Eagleton said it was safe to say ‘no records will be broken’.
A heatwave in Ireland is classified as five consecutive days of temperatures over 25 degrees.
Tuesday and Wednesday will be the warmest of the days with the mercury hitting 22 to 23 degrees. Temperatures will fall to 21 on Thursday and rise again on Friday to 23 to 24 degrees. Conditions are set to become ‘cooler and fresher’ from Saturday onwards. Met Éireann has also put in place a yellow warning for the spread of potato blight.
