McGuire hoping for third time lucky as she seeks nomination from party

TEREASA McGuire will contest the Fine Gael nomination for the new West Mayo Municipal District on December 1. She is only the second of five Fine Gael Westport Town Councillors to make that decisions so far, while Cllr Ollie Gannon, though believed to be seriously considering also seeking a nomination, has not yet declared his intent.
Councillors Myles Staunton and Michael McLaughlin will not put their names forward, while  Cllr Christy Hyland, along with county councillors Austin Frances O’Malley and Johno O’Malley will also be seeking a nomination. Councillor Peter Flynn revealed some weeks ago that he would not be running.
It will be Cllr McGuire’s third time to seek a nomination for the county council, and she is confident of being third time lucky.
“I have thought about this for some time. As a town councillor it was always my ambition to go to the next step, that it why I went knocking on the door twice before, but nobody opened it for me and I was not selected to run.
”I am surprised to hear that some of the siting councillors are not running, and Fine Gael and Westport are losing some high calibre and very capable candidates in Peter Flynn and Myles Staunton.
“I am confident of getting through convention and if it is the will of the people there I will be going for the elections, though I have to say I have no aspirations to go any further than that.”
Fine Gael will also run sitting councillor in Erris, Gerry Coyle, and may yet choose somebody to tackle the Achill area, though if only five candidates are to be selected at convention, as is believed to be the case, then one of them faces rejection.
