BREAKING Achill Island without power due to underground cable fault at Achill Sound – ESB cannot give time-frame for repair
Achill Island cut off
The whole of Achill Island is without power due to underground cable fault in Achill Sound
Anton McNulty
The people of Achill Island woke up this morning without electricity after a major fault at the entrance to the island cut off power to the island’s 2,300 customers. Crews from ESB Networks are currently on the ground trying to identify the fault and restore power. The electricity was cut off at approximately 5am this morning (Friday). A spokesperson for ESB told The Mayo News that they have identified a cable fault in the Achill Sound area, but have yet to identify where exactly the fault is. The spokesperson said that cable was in an underground line but could not say if the cable was on dry land or under water. She added that they did not have an estimated timeframe for when power will be restored. ESB cables going onto the island were moved underground during the construction of the new Michael Davitt Bridge at Achill Sound linking the island with the mainland.
