Man sent forward for trial for Louisburgh burglaries

A man is to be sent forward to Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court charged with the burglary of a Louisburgh newsagent twice in two days.
Colin Monaghan of World End Cottage, Carrowmore, Louisburgh, is charged with the burglary of €10,000 worth of cash and goods from Kenny’s Newsagents, Bridge Street, Louisburgh, on November 22 and November 23 last.
Judge Conal Gibbons heard at Westport District Court on Thursday last that on Thursday, November 22, €2,500 worth of cigarettes and €1,800 in cash was taken while the following day, €4,000 of cash, €1,500 worth of cigarettes and €200 worth of lottery scratch cards was taken.
The total value taken was exactly €10,000. Inspector Joe McKenna told the court that the cigarettes and scratch cards were recovered but the cash wasn’t.
Judge Conal Gibbons was told that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to the matter being dealt with in the district court, once the sitting judge accepted jurisdiction.
However Judge Gibbons said he didn’t feel the amount involved could be adequately dealt with in the district court and refused jurisdiction.
Monaghan was remanded on continuing bail to appear in Westport District Court on February 20, to be served with a book of evidence.
