Two men remain at large this morning following a car crash near the Galway/Mayo border at Belmont, Milltown, last night.
Gardaí are continuing a manhunt for the pair who were the driver and front seat passenger of a blue Volvo which Gardaí say was ‘acting suspiciously’ in the Hollymount area last night. It drove off ‘at speed’ when Gardaí approached it in Hollymount.
Two other men who were unable to free themselves from the back of the car following the collision were arrested and brought to Galway University Hospital where they are being treated for injuries, including broken bones. The injuries are described as not being life threatening.
The crash took place at approximately 9pm. The blue Volvo had false number plates. Gardaí were not in direct pursuit of the Volvo at the time of the crash. They had lost sight of the vehicle and were searching for it when they came upon the crash.
A Garda helicopter was deployed to assist Gardaí in south Mayo and north Galway with the search for the two men, but at time of writing they had not been apprehended. A Garda spokesperson admitted the chance of finding the men at this stage was ‘slim’.
The Gardaí are asking anyone who notices any individual or individuals acting suspiciously to contact Gardaí immediately, but are warning the public not to approach anyone. They are also asking people to be mindful of their own security and to make sure doors and windows are locked.
This incident follows an overnight chase in Mayo last weekend involving up to 30 garda cars. Gardaí were pursuing a criminal gang suspected of carrying out a number of burglaries in Mayo, Galway and Sligo.
